Reuters-Germany: Solz wants additional defense budget of € 2 billion – Mainly for aid to Ukraine

German Chancellor Olaf Solz wants his government to bring an additional 2 billion euros in defense to parliament, according to a Reuters source.

According to the source, most of the supplementary budget will be directed to military aid to Ukraine.

It is recalled that the German government consists of three parties, which must agree on the general direction of government policy: the center-left Social Democrats, from which Mr. Soltz comes, the center-left-environmental Greens and the center-left, the center-left which comes from Finance Minister Christian Lindner.

German-Ukrainian relations are going through a period of embarrassment, following reports that the staff of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky rejected the proposal of his German counterpart, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, to visit Kyiv.

The reason is the long-standing pro-Russian stance of the German head of state, when he served as Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and later as German Foreign Minister.
