Reuters: Russian units ready to invade Ukraine, warn Western officials

Western concerns about a Russian invasion of Ukraine have intensified in recent days as Russian military units are ready to launch a large-scale invasion and the overall picture looks very pessimistic, three senior officials told Reuters.

The three Western officials, speaking to Reuters on condition of anonymity, said Russian military units stationed near the Ukrainian border were now ready for an invasion, previously stationed for an invasion.

He also said that they did not know if Russian President Vladimir Putin had ordered the invasion to proceed, but that there had been a rise in false provocations in areas controlled by pro-Russian separatists.

“Concerns about what we see in the field have grown,” one of the officials told the agency. “The overall picture, I must say, is very bleak, with black clouds gathering at the Ukrainian border.”

Officials said they were watching closely the announcements from Putin’s Security Council meeting and the meetings of the two houses of the Russian parliament.

A second official said Russian forces were continuing to strengthen their forces, including S-400 missile systems, fighter jets and armored vehicles moving to advanced positions. Russia now has 110 regular battalion groups in the region, with two-thirds within 50km of the Ukrainian border. Of these, half have been strategically developed. “This is a move from being positioned for military operations to being ready for military operations,” the official said.
