Two employees of Ukraine’s Zaporizhia nuclear plant have been arrested for passing on information to Ukrainian authorities, the Russian National Guard and a local official said today, Reuters reports.
In a statement, the Russian National Guard said it prevented what it called “illegal actions” that threatened the security of the plant and arrested the two employees, who it said had passed information to the Ukrainian armed forces about the locations of personnel and equipment.
Russian authorities also announced that they had arrested a third person who had breached access procedures at the plant, describing that person as “an associate of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, who transmitted the coordinates of the movements of Russian equipment”.
The Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe, was seized by Russian troops last March. It remains close to the front lines of the war and has come under repeated fire in recent weeks, fueling fears of a global nuclear holocaust. Both Russia and Ukraine have accused each other of bombing the plant.
Vladimir Rogov, an official in the Russian-appointed administration, also said two other people were arrested on August 17 and accused of aiding Ukrainian forces.
