The German Minister of Economy, Robert Habeck, had been informed by the embassy of USA in Berlin on the eve of the Russian attack on an imminent invasion of Ukraine. Early that evening Habeck had received a visit to his ministry from the American embassy, he told Stern magazine.
“I received an envelope from which it emerged that “it will happen tonight. They unfreeze stored blood, arm the rocket launchers, they put signals on the vehicles and the troops move towards the border”. It was clear that the war was coming, it was becoming a bitter reality.”
It is recalled that Russian troops launched a full-scale invasion of the neighboring country a year ago, on the morning of February 24, on the orders of President Vladimir Putin.
The German Foreign Minister, Analena Burbok, told Stern that he still remembers that morning very clearly. “It took me a moment to realize that the phone’s vibration was real. At 4:51 am the first explosions were reported in Kiev. At 4:59 my office manager called me.”
She said that although it was clear that a war could break out, “yet when it does, it takes your breath away.”
