The Surveillance and Repression Division of the 3rd Fiscal Region of the Federal Revenue seized, during a routine operation at the Cargo Terminal at Fortaleza Airport this Thursday (23), a postal package containing two snakes of the species Lampropeltis Getula Nigrita, known as cobra -real-mexican-black.
The snakes were hidden in a package with clay stones, originating in Governador Mangabeira, in Bahia, and destined for Juazeiro do Norte, in the interior of Ceará. According to the Revenue, each snake seized is valued at around R$7,000 in regular trade.
The order was identified using risk analysis techniques, used to detect possible illicit acts in the transport of goods. This Thursday, the Federal Revenue had informed that the snakes seized belonged to the species Dendroaspis polylepis, known as black mamba, one of the most venomous in the world.
However, after a detailed veterinary analysis, the information was corrected, confirming that the snakes were, in fact, of the species Lampropeltis Getula Nigrita, the black Mexican king cobra.
Although they are not poisonous, black Mexican king cobras are valued at around R$7,000 in regular trade. Considered one of the most docile species for breeding, they are often sought after by collectors.
After seizure, the snakes were handed over to the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama), which will take the necessary measures to determine responsibility and, if possible, return the animals to their origin.
