The film is not just about the continuation of “Top Gun – Indomitable Aces”, from 1986, it is a true tribute to the predecessor. The opening scene, for example, is practically the same as in the original feature, including the Kenny Loggins song: “Danger Zone”.
However, we hear the classic keyboard, a hallmark of the 80s, a few times in the film, so the soundtrack is taken by the grandeur of Hans Zimmer that harmonizes with the sounds of supersonic fighter jets.
Who pilots one of them is Tom Cruise, who returns as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. This time, he’ll be the instructor on a mission that will feature America’s elite fighter pilots, including the son of Goose, Maverick’s longtime partner.
As a solo movie it’s good fun, but the immersion is greater if the original is seen. With less US Navy propaganda and more Imax cameras, the engagement with the story is more fluid than “Indomitable Aces”.
It is understood the reason for the missions, the afflictions of the characters and the possible romantic pairs that form. However, the couple “Charlie-Maverick” that drew sighs in the 80s to the sound of “Take My Breath Away”, by the band Berlin, does not return for the continuation of “Top Gun”. This time, we will have “Penny-Maverick” to the sound of “Hold My Hand”, by Lady Gaga.
Jennifer Connelly is Tom Cruise’s romantic partner, in the same passive-aggressive eighties tone, both have a troubled relationship threatened by Maverick’s rebellious behavior.
However, the trademarks of “Indomitable Aces” are not in the couple: the chemistry, the sweat and more daring scenes. The testosterone that the film evokes works more like a simulacrum of the original feature. In times of a puritanical Hollywood spearheaded by sterile Marvel movies, the romance in “Top Gun: Maverick” doesn’t stand out.
However, Pete Maverick remains the desire of every character in the film, being the topic of discussion for 90% of the dialogue. In this regard, the appetite is the same.
But, not to be unfair, we end up getting a glimpse of those sweaty 80’s when we see an American football scene on the beach, reminiscent of that of the volleyball match. All shirtless, including Cruise, who, after a few minutes, retires and lets his student pilots form a connection and learn to work as a team.
Peeling off, nearly 40 years later, both Cruise and Maverick don’t cling to their age. The actor gets closer to the character inside the cockpit when performing spectacular maneuvers with the F-18 fighters, infinitely better than those in the original film. There are no stunt doubles or any CGI in the aerial chase scenes, the G-force we see on all the actors’ faces is real.
It’s just Tom Cruise being himself. An artist with radical hobbies who found in the cinema a free space to carry them out, luckily for us.
