Emma D’Arcy who plays Rhaenyra Targaryen in “House of the Dragon” said that she needed to appear more femininity to get agency at the beginning of her career.
D’Arcy is a non-binary person and, nowadays, feels comfortable wearing her hair short — and is grateful for her character’s platinum-colored wig that allows for a little more anonymity — but it wasn’t always like that.
Reminiscing about her early 20s in an interview with The New York Times, she said: “I was growing my hair out to look more feminine, because I thought it would help me get an agent.”
When she got an agent around 2016, D’Arcy said she felt “total panic” at the thought that she would have to choose between working in TV acting or living in a way that was authentic to her gender identity.
When he received an email from HBO asking what his pronouns were before taking on the role in the “Game of Thrones” spin-off, he realized that it didn’t have to be that way.
“I owe her a huge debt of gratitude,” he said, referring to the wig worn by Rhaenyra, so different from her short, brown hair. According to D’Arcy, it is still possible to walk around London, his city, without being recognized.
