The mayor of São Paulo, Ricardo Nunes (MDB), classified the 99 motorcycle taxi service in the capital as “carnage”. The speech was made at CNN on Tuesday (14), when the company announced the start of operation of 99Moto.
“I am taking legal action against the company today. I will instruct an inspection and all motorcycles that are registered to carry out this type of service will be stopped. We will not allow this company to come here and bring carnage”, he stated.
In early 2023, Nunes signed a decree that temporarily suspended the app-based travel service on two-wheeled vehicles. A working group was established and concluded that the activity would put motorcyclists, passengers and third parties at risk.
Without an agreement with the city of São Paulo, 99 was based on a federal law on the National Urban Mobility Policy to start 99Moto’s operation on Tuesday (14).
“This is an illegal and irresponsible action on the part of the company, which fails to comply with the decree signed by Mayor Ricardo Nunes in January 2023 that suspends this modality”, stated the city hall, in a statement.
“This is not a land without an owner, it is not a land of no one. I have already been with them in several meetings, I warned them that they did not have authorization”, said Nunes. The city hall informed that the Municipal Attorney General’s Office will notify the company about the irregularity at the beginning of the activity.
The municipal executive also informed that the Municipal Road Use Committee has already notified the company and ordered the suspension of the transport service.
99, through a note, said that it will not comply with the determination and filed a writ of mandamus to continue with the service in São Paulo. “The company will maintain the operation and continues to defend the legality of the category, adopting all appropriate measures, in the appropriate instances, to preserve the rights of the company and users of the modality”, he stated.
According to the company, in 2024, the number of accidents was low due to the safety mechanisms used. “Only 0.0003% of races had a traffic accident. This was possible thanks to 50 safety features, including: speed alert, which issues warnings in cases of excess speed; governance against dangerous driving in traffic, which promotes awareness and, if necessary, also blocks reckless motorcyclists; preventive driving courses and guidance; in addition to data checking, race monitoring; among others”, says the note sent to CNN .
Throughout the state of São Paulo, the service is available in 434 municipalities such as Guarulhos, Osasco and cities in ABC Paulista.
