With the increase in the price of corn and the impacts on the value and growth estimate of the animal feed sector, the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) started to recommend rice as a cereal alternative in food.
According to Embrapa, the grain can make swine and poultry rations cheaper, ensuring the same nutritional quality. The research also reinforces that rice can lower costs, since the last crop in Brazil had leftovers of the cereal.
In an interview with CNN Embrapa researcher Jorge Lúdique told how rice from the previous harvest is being used to replace corn.
“In this case, we are talking about 5% of the rice produced in the South region that would be available to be used advantageously in the feeding of swine and poultry, since [estamos] in a scenario of corn deficit, of corn shortage in the southern region of Brazil”, he explained.
