The United States is not prepared to reach an agreement on the revival of the 2015 agreement on Iran’s nuclear program, as Washington insists on “unacceptable proposals” in the talks in Vienna, said the head of the Iranian security services Ali Samhani.
Iran will not back down from its red lines, Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi stressed today.
“The government is strongly seeking the lifting of sanctions on the Vienna talks,” he said in a Twitter post.
Meanwhile, the Nour news agency, which is linked to Iran’s top security body, said the new agreement on Iran’s nuclear program should not restrict Tehran’s ballistic and space programs.
Iran is not prepared to negotiate on its defense capabilities and regional policy, Nour added in a Twitter post.
After 11 months of talks in Vienna, there seemed to be a happy ending to the revival of the 2015 agreement on Iran’s nuclear program, until a few days ago Russia created a new obstacle by seeking written assurances from the US that Western sanctions against it for the invasion in Ukraine will not affect its trade relations with Iran.
Samhani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme Security Council, said on Twitter that in the absence of political decisions by the United States, the talks “are becoming more and more complicated with each passing day.”
The United States “does not want a strong agreement,” he said, adding that Washington was making “unacceptable proposals and insisting on a speedy agreement based on pretexts.”
Samhani did not elaborate on the US proposals.
US Secretary of State Victoria Nuland on Tuesday accused Russia of seeking extra profits from its involvement in efforts to revive the 2015 agreement.
The negotiators of France, Britain and Germany have temporarily withdrawn from the talks as they believe that they have progressed as far as possible and it is now up to the US and Iran to agree on the outstanding issues.
Iran’s chief negotiator, Ali Bagheri Kani, has returned to Tehran abruptly after Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov made new demands to Moscow.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry has stated that Tehran will not allow “foreign elements” to harm its interests.
Bagheri went to Vienna again yesterday, Wednesday.
