After nearly 35 years of living together, Tom Ford’s husband, Richard Buckley, passed away last Sunday following a long illness. The fashion journalist died at the age of 72 in his and his partner’s house in Los Angeles, with his son Alexander John Buckley Ford at his side. “It is with great sadness that Tom Ford announces the death of his beloved husband” declared the designer in a note, with whom he had celebrated an intimate wedding in 2014. The two met at a fashion show in 1986, when Buckley worked for WWD, and they have never left since: “I went to a fashion show, and this silver-haired boy started staring at me with his piercing blue eyes.

Richard Buckley was born in Binghamton, NY in 1948 and was raised in New York, France and Germany. After graduating from the University of Maryland in Munich, he began pursuing a career in journalism in 1979, at the New York Magazine. In 1982 he moved to Paris as a European editor of the Daily News Record by Fairchild Publications, the male counterpart of WWD. In 1986, the year in which he met Tom Ford, the journalist was in New York because he was called by the editorial director John B. Fairchild, to fill the role of editor in the new magazine Scene, and later at WWD.
Scene in fact, it didn’t take off as the editor expected, and after two years in the same publishing house, Richard Buckley landed from Vanity Fair as a Social Editor, under the direction of Tina Brown. When, in 1990, he and Tom Ford moved to Milan, Buckley instead became the magazine’s European editor-in-chief Mirabella, while Ford joined the Gucci design team. After some time the couple moved to Paris, where the journalist became chief editor of Vogue Mens International, but the two did not settle in the French capital for long: they also lived in London, New York, Santa Fe and, in recent years, Los Angeles.
