Right whale and calf are caught in a rare sighting off the coast of Rio de Janeiro; look

In a rare sighting off the coast of Rio de Janeiro, a right whale was spotted swimming alongside a calf at Praia de São Conrado, south of Rio.

The impressive record was made by professional photographer Humberto Badine, on Thursday (27), and the images went viral on social networks.

“God grant protection to our planet, human consciousness. This is too beautiful and we cannot let it be destroyed,” wrote one internet user.

“What an amazing record. Winter in Rio with abundant marine life”, commented a follower of the photographer.

In an interview with CNN Badine said that he had already photographed the marine animal in Bahia, but considered the record in Rio more surprising due to the weather conditions, which contributed to the capture of the maternal moment.

“I had gone to a meeting and I took my drone. And then, at the end of the appointment, I walked back along the beach. On the way, there was a lady photographing the whale. Then I stopped the car at the time, climbed the drone and managed to film. It was very emotional because she was with the puppy and it was possible to make beautiful images”, said Badine.

Famous for recording paradisiacal images, the 31-year-old photographer does not hesitate to choose the scene as the most exciting of his career.

“It’s going to be hard to top this one because it’s an extraordinary moment. I got a take showing Pedra da Gávea, to enhance our city. It was certainly the most amazing video I’ve ever made”, he celebrates.

rare record

According to biologist Ricardo Gomes, from the Mar Urbano Institute, the species had not been spotted so close to Rio’s beaches for over 7 years.

“Their population is declining and they haven’t been seen like this, so close to the beach, for over 7 years. Everything indicates that mother and calf are the same whales that were recorded on Monday in the Cagarras Islands. So they are circling the coastline,” she said.

Right whales are large-sized cetaceans, being able to reach, according to historical records, more than 17 meters in length in females and a little less in males.

Adult females, according to records, can weigh more than 60 tons, while for males weights above 45 tons are not uncommon.

Although the appearance draws attention for its beauty, biologist Ricardo Gomes warns about the importance of keeping your distance from the whales, so as not to disturb reproduction, which reduces the risk of extinction of the species.

To protect whales and prevent the pursuit of cetaceans, master in environmental sciences Liliane Lodi developed a manual called “Good practices for whale watching in the city of Rio de Janeiro”which offers tips for observing the animals.
