Rincon Sapiência closes the year of Brazilian rap with the release of an EP; listen up

Since the hit “Ponta de Lança (Verso Livre)” put Rincon Sapiência in the spotlight among new Brazilian rappers, at the end of 2016, December 26th has been turned into their special date for releases.

Superstition or tradition, this Sunday (26), he closes the year of Brazilian rap with an EP with two songs: “De Onde Cê Vem (Verso Livre)” and “Serenata”.

In an interview with CNN, the rapper tells details and backstage of the release’s production, the possibility of the arrival of his third album in 2022 and the mission to highlight new artists from the outskirts of São Paulo through his MGoma label.

Listen to the EP “O Peso das Barra”:

The opening track, “De Onde Cê Vem (Verso Livre)”, emerged from a joke in August, during an episode of “RAP, fala” – a musical podcast with a special focus on hip hop.

Rincon participated in a painting in which the guest rappers present a “free verse” – in short, a production characterized by the rhythm of rhymes made in an irregular way, with verses without a defined meter.

The artist says that a few days before participating in the recording, he spoke with the podcast’s DJ, 808 Luke, and asked for a beat “without much information” to rhyme on top.

“It was all very organic, fast”, he explained, saying that he finished writing the verses shortly before the program.

Rocked by the good repercussions on social media, the song was chosen for its year-end special, in 2021.

“Rap manages to make a comeback. Make way, pass the tractor. And in this practice, blacks are earning less, it’s a factor”

European round production

Away from the stage for months by the Covid-19 pandemic, Rincon’s reunion with the public ended up happening on the other side of the Atlantic.

The first performance was in the Swiss city of Basel. But it was two weeks later, in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon, that the second song on the release, “Serenata”, took shape.

It is produced in partnership with rapper Timor YSF – raised in Portugal, but with deep roots in Cape Verde –, who Rincon met backstage at a festival in 2018.

“I research a lot of music from Portuguese-speaking countries. My plan was precisely, after delivering the shows, to connect with artists from there,” the rapper told CNN.

The two started to follow each other on social networks and, with their return to Portugal in 2021, the partnership took place.

“Head burns on the pillow. I want land, I’m not an heir. Money spins like a cyclone. Take a walk, then disappear. When the belly rumbles with hunger. Nobody chooses what they eat.”

The production of “Serenata” also yielded a clip, scheduled for release this Sunday afternoon (26).

The first images were shot in the region where rapper Timor YSF grew up, the “Cova da Moura”. The neighborhood is on the outskirts of the Lisbon metropolitan region, and is traditionally occupied by migrant families.

“I felt so at home there, and I have tremendous gratitude,” recalls Rincon.

The production was completed with recordings in tailor shops in the East Zone of São Paulo, the cradle of the rapper, who grew up at Cohab 1, in Itaquera.

“It’s impossible for you to disassociate rap and fashion.”

The release of the EP “O Peso das Barra” is the first step in the rapper’s planning for next year.

With a series of singles accumulated since the release of his last album, “Mundo Manicongo: Dramas, Danças e Afroreps”, in 2019, Rincon makes a mystery about when the third album of his career will arrive.

“I can say that we have a lot of material. We have more news, and I promise songs won’t be missing. I have great expectations”, he said.

“I know this album is going to happen, it’s going to have a sequel. At the right time, we will pass. What makes me excited are the possibilities with the material I already have and the collaborations that exist”, he adds.

At 36 years old, the rapper recently completed three years of business career in charge of the MGoma label. In this endeavor, managing the careers of young artists, Rincon tries to be “a facilitator” for new rappers on the outskirts of São Paulo.

Just last week, two new artists entered the label’s catalogue, and he expects to deepen this expansion.

“I’ve been making music since I was 15, and I’ve always had to leave the area to go to the studios and make contacts. Today, given the history I already have, I can be a facilitator for people to be able to access music, and work properly without leaving their region”, he concluded.
