According to data from the Brazilian Geological Survey (SGB), the Amazon River Basin records levels below normal for the period, in some stations. The most critical situation is observed in the Rio Branco, which is to the north of the basin.
The SGB reported that the river reached –36 centimeters, the second lowest in history, behind the record of –56.5 centimeters, recorded in 2016.
The descents were observed in Boa Vista, in Roraima.
“This recession scenario is due to the accumulation of rainfall below normal for this period in the region”, said researcher Jussara Cury in a publication on the networks of the Geological Survey of Brazil.
Despite the drought, however, researchers believe that the situation could be reversed in the coming days. “ANDRain is forecast for this week and, despite being a small volume, the expectation is that the river's rate of retreat will decrease”, said Jussara.
🚨 Last Friday, we released the 12th Hydrological Alert Bulletin for the Amazon River Basin, highlighting the drop in the level of the Rio Branco, in Roraima, which reached -36 cm, the second minimum in history, behind the record of -56.5 cm, recorded in 2016. pic.twitter.com/PswCISJK2a

Dry on one side, full on the other
The Acre River, which recorded historic highs at the beginning of the month and caused flooding, is now in the process of recession. In the capital Rio Branco (AC), average daily drops of 40 cm were recorded, and the elevation is 6.14 m, below the historical average for the period.
