Rio Carnival drives tourism and economy, says Marcelo Freixo

During the ceremony of delivery of the city’s key to King Momo, held on Friday (28) at the City Palace, in Botafogo, the president of Embratur, Marcelo Freixo, highlighted the importance of Carnival for tourism and the economy of Brazil. The event was attended by the mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes (PSD).

According to Freixo, Brazil recorded record numbers in the tourist sector in 2024, with 6.7 million international tourists and a collection of US $ 7.3 billion. In January this year alone, the country received 1.48 million foreign visitors, an increase of 55% over the same period last year, when 900,000 tourists were recorded.

“Carnival has grown 12% compared to last year. It’s not just a popular party, but a job and income generation engine. The production of joy is important for GDP. Tourism can be, in the 21st century, what oil was in the twentieth century, but with sustainability and inclusion, ”said Freixo.

The president of Embratur stressed that the party extends beyond Rio and São Paulo, moving various regions of the country. “It has super important carnivals in Minas Gerais, Recife, Salvador and in small cities, which also produce joy, employment and income. Often, carnival guarantees work all year round, as with samba schools in large Brazilian cities. ”

Rio de Janeiro breaks tourist records

In Rio de Janeiro, the tourist flow also breaks records. The state received 240,151 foreign tourists in January this year, an increase of 46% over the same period of 2024, according to the State Secretariat of Tourism (Setur-RJ). More than 8 million people are expected to participate in the festivities, moving R $ 6.5 billion in the Fluminense economy, being R $ 5 billion only in the capital.

Setur-RJ and Turisrio reinforced attendance to visitors with the #Tônorio project, which includes a polyglot lounge in Sapucaí, bilingual guides at the Tourist Support Police Station (DEAT) and the Rio Digital Guide, available by QR Codes at strategic points.

“With records of tourists, historical investments and a diverse program, Carnival 2025 promises to consolidate Rio de Janeiro as one of the world’s most popular destinations during the most popular party in Brazil,” said Secretary of State for Tourism, Gustavo Tutuca.
