The request of Public Ministry of the State of Rio de Janeiro (MP-RJ), the Justice extended for another 30 days the temporary arrest of Cíntia Mariano Dias Cabral, who has been in prison since May 20 on suspicion of having poisoned her two stepchildren. Bruno Carvalho Cabral, 16, survived, but his sister, Fernanda Carvalho Cabral, 22, died on March 28, after spending 13 days in the hospital.
The decision was made by Judge Alexandre Abrahão Dias Teixeira, of the 3rd Criminal Court of the Rio de Janeiro . “Only the maintenance of Cíntia’s prison will allow the eventual application of the criminal law and the instant guarantee of public order, avoiding criminal repetition, which has already been seen in these records due to the emergence of elements of the second fact now better established. Such a measure proves to be indispensable for the success of the criminal investigation,” he wrote.
On the 15th of May, Bruno had lunch at the house where his father, Adeílson Cabral, felt sick after the meal — he complained about the taste of beans and was surprised by the presence of a blue substance. The teenager felt dizzy, got wet with sweat and soon couldn’t speak anymore, his tongue curling. He was admitted to the Albert Schweitzer municipal hospital, in Realengo, West Zone of Rio, and managed to recover from the intoxication – he was discharged on the 19th of the same month.
Cintia was arrested on the 20th. Initially, she told the Civil Police that the blue substance detected in the beans was an industrialized food seasoning. Then, in official testimony and accompanied by a lawyer, she remained silent.
Medical examination of gastric juice taken from Bruno’s stomach found no poison, which is quickly absorbed by the body, but identified four capsules similar to those used to harbor rat poison. “The examination carried out in the laboratory of the Instituto Médico Legal revealed the presence of four tiny, dark blue spherical granules, a form of presentation of a rodenticide widely and clandestinely marketed, known as ‘chumbinho'”, says the report. and the presentation of the granules reveals a classic picture of poisoning by rodenticides, carbamates, aldicarb. If the victim had not been subjected to immediate treatment, as happened, he would probably have died”, the document continues.
From the alleged attempt to kill her stepson, the stepmother also began to be investigated for the death of Bruno’s sister, Fernanda. She died in March after showing symptoms similar to her brother’s and being admitted to the same hospital. At the time, however, there was still no suspicion of poisoning, and there was no specific treatment for it. Fernanda’s body was exhumed on May 26 and tests are being carried out to try to identify signs of poisoning.
When consulted by the report about the extension of the temporary detention, Cíntia’s defense had not commented until the publication of this text.
