The Rio Court of Justice ordered, this Saturday (18), that Light restore the electricity supply in the Rocinha community within 48 hours, under penalty of a daily fine of R$50,000 in case of non-compliance. Residents of the community have been without electricity for more than a week.
The decision, handed down by judge Sandro Lucio Barbosa Pitassi, responds to the request of the Public Defender’s Office of Rio de Janeiro through a Public Civil Action.
Faced with complaints regarding the lack of energy supply in Rocinha, which have persisted for nine days, the Rio Public Defender’s Office, through the Consumer Defense Center (Nudecon), initiated the action demanding the rights of consumers harmed by the interruption of service of light in the region.
“In a situation of extreme heat, leaving the people of the Rocinha community without electricity for so many days is inhumane treatment against a vulnerable population that the Public Defender’s Office could not accept in silence”, stated the coordinator of the Consumer Defense Center (Nudecon) , Eduardo Chow by Martino Tostes.
The determination also highlights that the lack of electricity affects the well-being and health of thousands of residents, highlighting that Light did not take action even after the request from the Public Defender’s Office.
Last Thursday (16), residents of Rocinha closed the Lagoa-Barra Highway, in both directions, for almost two hours, in protest.
A CNN Light confirms that it has already been notified and has made every effort to resolve the situation.
According to the concessionaire, which serves 31 municipalities in Rio de Janeiro and around 11.6 million consumers, its teams have been moving to Rocinha, restoring energy to customers who have complaints.
However, Light also highlights that one of the challenges in solving the problem is the overload on the network due to illegal connections, which reach 84% of homes in the community.
“The distributor’s equipment is configured and installed to serve the company’s customers and ends up becoming overloaded with the irregular demand caused by cats and shutting down, causing interruptions,” says the statement.
The company ensures that it continues to operate daily in the region and reinforces its teams to carry out the necessary repairs.
