The Rio de Janeiro City Hall created a committee to study the rising sea level in the city, following the warning from the United Nations (UN).
The UN carried out a study on the Pacific Ocean which shows that, among the affected cities, the capital Rio de Janeiro is under threat of flooding and could see sea levels rise by up to 21 centimeters by 2050.
The creation of the ‘Rio Committee for Scientific Studies on Sea Rising’ was published in the city’s Official Gazette this Wednesday (28).
The group will promote public policies, study sea levels, organize a database with research information and consult national and international scientific bodies to implement actions.
The Committee will be chaired by the Municipal Secretariat for Government Coordination (SMCG) and composed of the city’s Environment and Climate Secretariat and five other bodies.
The decision to create the commission took into account the warning from UN Secretary-General António Guterres that rising sea levels are a humanitarian crisis and that “the world must act and respond to the SOS, before it is too late”.
UN Alert
According to the entity’s study, which analyzed the average global level of the Pacific Ocean over the last 3,000 years, the rate of sea level rise has more than doubled in the last decade compared to the previous one.
In addition to Rio de Janeiro, the projection showed that, in the city of Atafona (RJ), the sea level rose 13 centimeters between 1990 and 2020. The report was released this Tuesday (26).
It is estimated that, between 2020 and 2050, this measurement will increase by another 16 centimeters (with a margin of error between 12 and 21 centimeters).
The UN report states that the risks of this increase are coastal flooding and increased land subsidence in regions exploited by human action.
This can occur at sites where dams are being built or where groundwater and fossil fuels are being extracted.
