Rio de Janeiro Civil Police arrest balloon manufacturer and seize materials

The Civil Police, through the Metropolitan Police Station (DPMA), arrested a balloon manufacturer and seized materials for producing the artifact, on Thursday afternoon (29), in Rio de Janeiro. Watch the video of the seized items .

The man identified as Célio de Araújo Mattos, whose age was not revealed, was approached at his residence on Rua Bernardo, in the Engenho de Dentro neighborhood, in the North Zone of the capital of Rio de Janeiro.

Following reports, agents found a veritable arsenal for making balloons at the site. They seized 19 ready-made balloons, hundreds of dowels, several shields belonging to balloon groups, and a large quantity of material for making the artifacts.

The investigation identified that the balloons were manufactured to supply several groups of balloonists, including: “Diamante Negro”, “Evolução e Amigos”, “Turma Cavaleira”, “Turma Kaus” and “Turma Só Nos”.

The police action was launched under the command of Police Chief Dr. André Prates, who learned of information about the use of the property for the manufacture of balloons. The case will be investigated based on article 42 of Law 9605/98, which deals with environmental crimes.

Law prohibits the manufacture of balloons

Article 42 of Law 9.605/98, also known as the Environmental Crimes Law, considers it a crime to manufacture, sell, transport or release balloons that could cause fires in forests and other types of vegetation. The penalty for this crime is imprisonment of one to three years, a fine, or both penalties cumulatively. The law was sanctioned in 1998 by President Fernando Henrique Cardozo.
