Rio de Janeiro considers suspending elective surgeries due to lack of professionals

The state government of Rio de Janeiro is considering suspending elective surgeries in public hospitals due to the large number of health professionals contaminated by Covid-19.

The information was released, this Thursday (13), by the State Department of Health (SES). According to the folder, the contaminations are a consequence of the advancement of the Ômicron variant.

In recent weeks, Rio de Janeiro has recorded a high number of cases of coronavirus in most municipalities in the state. In the state capital alone, at least 12,000 employees of municipal hospitals had to be removed for having contracted the disease between December and January.

The researcher at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), Raphael Guimarães, says that the measure can ensure that hospitals carry out emergency procedures, which may arise because of Covid-19.

“The cancellation of these procedures cannot even be classified as successful or not. The truth is that they may be canceled for reasons of force majeure. Without professionals there is no way to perform the procedures. And, to ensure that Rio’s health structure can handle urgent and emergency procedures, which may arise because of Covid-19, electives will unfortunately be postponed. Remembering that it will not be the first time that we do this during the pandemic”, highlighted the Fiocruz researcher.
