Rio de Janeiro dawned with negative temperature in Itatiaia Park

The day dawned even colder in most regions of Brazil. In the early morning hours of this Friday (20), the Itatiaia National Park, in Rio de Janeiro, recorded -3.8°C.

Images provided by the site show the frost. According to the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet), the cold and negative temperatures can remain for a period of three to five days, but begin to lose strength from this Saturday (21).

Resende should also record a temperature close to zero. According to the municipal civil defense bulletin, the minimum temperature expected for today (20) is 9º. In the higher parts of the city, such as Visconde de Mauá, the forecast is 1°C for the minimum.

The city hall highlighted that it has mobilized an institutional shelter for the homeless, which has food, beds and mattresses, in addition to activities for the inmates. City Hall teams are doing an approach service on the streets to offer shelter during the coldest days.

The hangover warning issued by the Brazilian Navy warns of waves of 2.5 to 4.0 meters until 9 pm this Friday (20). In the capital, the Operations Center, through Alerta Rio, throughout Saturday (21), the transport of moisture from the ocean to the continent will leave the sky varying from cloudy to partially cloudy, however, there is no forecast of rain.

Between Sunday (22) and Tuesday (24), there will be a reduction of cloudiness and there is no forecast of rain for the city of Rio de Janeiro.

According to meteorologist and professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Wanderson Luiz Silva, autumn is a transitional season between the hot and humid climate of summer and the cold and dry climate of winter. Thus, it is sometimes common for these characteristics to alternate more frequently in this period.

“It is part of the natural variability of the climate, even more on an interannual scale, that we sometimes have the months of May with more or less frequency and intensity of cold fronts and polar masses. This intense mass of cold air that currently dominates much of the central-south portion of Brazil will begin to lose strength in the coming days.

The expectation is that we will have the return of the sun and milder temperatures next week. Sometimes, interspersed with these more stable periods, we will still have other entries of cold fronts and polar masses that may be weaker or even stronger than the latter”, highlights the meteorologist.
