Rio de Janeiro depends on new shipments to keep children immunized

With the arrival on Tuesday (18) of over 33,950 pediatric doses of Pfizer to the capital of Rio de Janeiro, the City of Rio de Janeiro hopes to comply with the vaccination schedule for children by the end of the week. With this, the stock of immunizing would be enough to vaccinate those who are up to 10 years old.

Then there may be a delay in the calendar. The Ministry of Health reported that the third batch of vaccines, with 1.8 million pediatric doses, scheduled to arrive on Thursday (27) was brought forward to Monday (24).

“If it arrives on Monday, we will only have to vaccinate on Tuesday (25). If they manage to anticipate and arrive on Saturday or Sunday, we distribute at dawn and continue with the schedule on Monday”, explained the municipal secretary of Health, Daniel Soranz, who reaffirmed the need for the Ministry of Health to comply with the planning of sending doses.

Only this Monday (17), the first day of the campaign, 18,662 children were vaccinated. For the immunization of 11-year-old boys, on Tuesday, only 15,288 doses remained. The secretary also explained that the possible release of Coronavac for use in children can help advance vaccination planning.

“It is important for us to wait for Anvisa’s approval to know if it will be the same vaccine that is being applied to adults or if it will be a new formulation”, he said.

High number of hospitalizations

The city’s biggest concern at the moment is the increase in the number of hospitalizations caused by the Ômicron variant. The occupancy of beds in the municipal public network is around 60%. On Tuesday morning (18), 644 patients were hospitalized with Covid-19, most of them without seriousness.

However, the growth in demand in hospitals made it necessary to reopen beds. “Unfortunately, we were forced to reopen beds at Ronaldo Gazolla Hospital. There are already 150 beds reopened in this hospital and if necessary, we will be constantly reopening beds, up to our operational capacity, which is 1,400 beds”, informed the secretary. ,

Soranz reinforced the importance of vaccination for the prevention of serious conditions and deaths from the disease. “It is very important that people have a collective conscience and know that they are much more at risk of being hospitalized and getting worse if they do not get vaccinated,” he said.
