Rio de Janeiro has 12 children hospitalized for Covid-19 in the municipal public network

On the day that the vaccination campaign for children between the ages of 5 and 11 begins in Rio, the Municipal Health Department counts 12 children hospitalized for Covid-19 in the public network of the capital, two of them in serious condition.

“The recommendation is that parents try to vaccinate their children as soon as possible. The sooner you protect yourself from Covid-19 is very important. 90% of patients hospitalized today, in the city of Rio, are people who have not taken the vaccine”, informed the Secretary of Health, Daniel Soranz.

According to data from the prefecture panel on Monday morning (17), 506 patients were hospitalized for the disease in the municipal public network, which has a 60% bed occupancy rate.

Last week, the number of Covid-19 cases broke records in the Rio de Janeiro capital. They reached 30,000 in just 24 hours. The increase has been attributed to the Ômicron variant.

According to Soranz, in the coming days it will be possible to have a better idea of the evolution of the epidemic. “The Ômicron variant is behaving in many countries with a range of 25 to 35 days. It is an interval that we consider short. But we cannot know how this behavior will be in the population of Rio de Janeiro. We are preparing the network, expanding testing points, service capacity, preparing for all scenarios, even if it is a short wave as some epidemiologists have said”, he said.

Fiocruz predicts worsening epidemiological scenario

Published on Saturday (15), Fiocruz’s InfoGripe Bulletin recorded a 135% increase in the moving average of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) cases in the last three weeks, up to January 8, compared to the final weeks of November.

According to Fiocruz, the index is very worrying and reflects the arrival of Ômicron and the end-of-year festivities. The researchers also understand that the scenario will become more critical next week. Since practically all states have a probability of more than 95% in the accentuation of cases. Only Roraima shows a downward trend.
