Rio de Janeiro has a black person killed every 8 hours and 24 minutes

Security agents in Rio de Janeiro killed 1,042 black people in 2022 (86.98% of cases with complete color and race information). This is what the bulletin “Target Skin: the bullet doesn’t miss the black” shows, released this Thursday (16), by the Observatory Network.

The state is the second with the most deaths due to lethality caused by police officers. Every eight hours and 24 minutes a black person dies as a result of police intervention in Rio de Janeiro.

The state fell from first to second position in the ranking of federative units with the highest number of deaths by security agents, although the total number of deaths increased – from 1,214 in 2021 to 1,330 in 2022.

In the capital alone, 33.4% of fatal cases were recorded, with 444 deaths. Next comes the São Gonçalo region, with 131 cases (9.8%). Duque de Caxias recorded 129 deaths (9.7%).

In the state, the majority of victims were between 18 and 29 years old, with a total of 482 deaths (36.24% of victims). Children and adolescents aged between 12 and 17 account for 3.76% of deaths, 50 people.
