The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) issued this Thursday afternoon (1st) a warning of great danger for storms in parts of the state of Rio de Janeiro. The alert is valid until 11:59 pm today.
According to the institute, there is a possibility of rain exceeding 60 millimeters per hour or more than 100 mm/day, in addition to winds exceeding 100 km/h. Inmet also warns of the possibility of hail, electricity cuts, damage to plantations, falling trees, flooding and disruption to road transport.
The areas that may be affected by the storms are the metropolitan region, lowlands and the south of the state.
On the weekend of January 13th and 14th, 12 people died in Rio de Janeiro after heavy rains hit the capital and Baixada Fluminense. The deaths occurred in the cities of Rio de Janeiro, Duque de Caxias, Nova Iguaçu, São João de Meriti and Belford Roxo.
According to the Fire Department, the deaths were due to drowning, burial and electric shock.
Nine cities in Rio de Janeiro declared an emergency situation after the January storms: Rio de Janeiro, São João de Meriti, Mesquita, Duque de Caxias, Nova Iguaçu, Nilópolis, Queimados, Japeri and Miguel Pereira.
Alerts in the Southeast
In addition to Rio de Janeiro, the arrival of a cold front is expected to cause storms in parts of the Southeast region of Brazil, with a warning of strong winds and hail this Thursday.
According to Inmet, the states of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo can record accumulations of 30 mm/h or up to 55 mm/day, with winds of up to 60 km/h. The alert is valid until 10am on Friday (2).
