Rio de Janeiro has first suspected case of the Ômicron variant

The first suspected case of the Ômicron variant in Rio de Janeiro is under analysis at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation. The information was confirmed by the municipal secretary of Health of Rio, Daniel Soranz, this Wednesday (1). The expectation is that the result comes out until Thursday.

The patient is a 29-year-old woman who arrived from South Africa on the 21st. The flight made stops in Johannesburg, Ethiopia and São Paulo, before arriving in Rio de Janeiro.

Even without symptoms, she routinely performed a Covid-19 PCR test on day 29, which was positive.

The exam was redone and the material was sent to Fiocruz for sequencing to determine if it is a case of the new variant discovered for the first time in South Africa.

The woman was traveling with her husband, who tested negative. All contacts with people made since landing were monitored.

So far, the results have been negative for Covid-19.

According to the Health Department of the capital, the patient had taken two doses of Pfizer’s immunizing agent against Covid-19, still in Brazil.

Soranz claims that the City of Rio is closely monitoring the city’s epidemiological situation.

Not much is known about the variant, but there is also no evidence that it is more resistant to immunizers. Therefore, at this time, vaccination is essential.

According to the Municipal Health Department, 76.9% of the Rio population has completed the vaccination schedule and 20% of adults are already on the booster dose.
