The temperature in the city of Rio de Janeiro reached 41.1ºC on Saturday (4), with a thermal sensation of 58ºC in Santa Cruz, west of Rio de Janeiro. According to Alerta Rio – the city hall’s monitoring system – the thermal sensation is the greatest since 2009, when the agency started measuring.
This summer, the record hitherto had been recorded on January 15, when the thermometers scored 40.3ºC, with a thermal sensation of 54ºC.
Alerta Rio meteorologist Juliana Hermsdorff explains that “the presence of hot air at various levels of the atmosphere, together with the high temperature and humidity on the surface, caused the thermal sensation of 58ºC”.
Juliana adds that “the thermal sensation is a calculation performed with measured meteorological variables, to quantify the temperature that the human body feels, in a generalized way”.
