Rio de Janeiro police apprehend teenager who planned to attack school

A 17-year-old minor was apprehended this Friday (24th) at the school itself, in downtown Rio de Janeiro, by police officers from the Police Station for the Protection of Children and Adolescents (DPCA) and the Police Station for Racial Crimes and Crimes of Intolerance (Decradi).

According to the police, the teenager was planning an attack against students and teachers at the unit. He was located after an exchange of information between the Civil Police, the Federal Police, Interpol and the Secretary of Education of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Seeduc).

One of the delegates responsible for the case, Marcus Vinícius Braga, from the Police Station for the Protection of Children and Adolescents, explained that the minor is being investigated for an act analogous to the crime of terrorism and, now, the police are trying to find out if he acted alone or in a group.

“We instituted a procedure to understand whether with this action of ours the attack was avoided or if there is still a network that depends on a later investigation”, revealed the delegate.

The civil police shared with the press videos that were released by the teenager on the deep web, an area of the internet that is hidden and has little regulation. In the recordings, the minor makes threats, displays weapons, shows Nazi symbols and uses cruel words about planning the death of students and teachers.

The apology for Nazism is being investigated by the Police Station for Racial Crimes and Intolerance Crimes (Decradi). According to the delegate, Rita Salim, the investigations will show whether he was encouraged to commit extremist acts by any channel. “Decradi will break this down to be able to reach the channels he frequented and that possibly other teenagers, adults also frequent. We are going to identify who is disclosing and monitoring these channels”.

According to the police, the attack on the school was planned for April 20. Date that marks the 24th anniversary of the Columbine massacre in the United States. Two students heavily armed entered a high school in the state of Colorado and killed 13 people (12 students and a teacher). Another 24 people were injured.

Delegate Marcus Vinícius Braga highlighted that sensitivity in this case has to be very high and the profile of the young person needs to be studied.

“He needs, at this moment, the State will do this, access to psychologists, psychiatrists to better understand this differentiated profile. It is not the profile of a juvenile offender who commits a common crime, it really needs to be studied”.
