Rio de Janeiro prepares measures to face water crisis

After a meeting with several bodies, the governor of Rio de Janeiro, Cláudio Castro, reported that the government is preparing a contingency plan for the water crisis caused by the drying up of rivers .

According to him, two million people living in cities such as Niterói, São Gonçalo, Itaboraí, Maricá, among others, are already suffering from reduced water supply .

“So it is something that before it gets worse, we are already working on and this conversation was fundamental to find solutions such as sending water trucks, contingency actions and publicity so that we can reduce the effects of this water crisis because it is in Brazil, not just in Rio de Janeiro”, said the governor on the morning of this Monday (16).

According to the Rio de Janeiro State Water and Sewage Company, 10% of the water supply has already been reduced for people served by the Imunana-Laranjal System. According to the company, if the situation persists, there may be further reductions in water supply.

According to the state government, water tankers will be made available to the affected regions, prioritizing schools, daycare centers and hospitals. Due to the drought, the water supply systems of Mangaratiba, Maca, Acari, and Imunana-Laranjal are on alert.

The dams of the Acari System (Tinguá, Xerém, Rio D’Ouro, São Pedro and Mantiquira) that supply part of Baixada Fluminense, are facing a historic drought.
