The state of Rio de Janeiro reached a new record in the number of rifle seizures, this Monday (30), with 500 units collected. The last record recorded was in 2019, when 505 long firearms were seized.
According to the State Secretariat of the Military Police of Rio de Janeiro (SEPM), the mark achieved has already surpassed the quantity seized in 2023, which totaled 492. “In the month of August alone, SEPM counted 78 rifles, which is equivalent to two rifles a day”, highlighted the agency.
The data provided by SEPM are part of a survey carried out by the Undersecretariat of Intelligence (SSI) of the State Secretariat of Military Police, which counts daily the balance of seizures obtained by the corporation’s operational units throughout the state territory.
“In addition to the numbers, the information is analyzed to detect other relevant data, such as, for example, the areas where the rifles are seized, the caliber and origin of the weapons,” said the Military Police.
Seizures
According to a survey by the Undersecretariat of Intelligence (SSI), the largest volume of seizures of these weapons of war occurs in regions where criminal factions dispute occupation and territorial leadership in communities.
“The policing area of the 41st Military Police Battalion, in Irajá, which covers part of the north zone and part of the west zone, recorded the highest number of seizures: 76 rifles,” stated the State Secretariat of Military Police.
Furthermore, SSI analysts stated that more than 90% of seizures occurred in the metropolitan region, especially in the regions of the 2nd CPA (Area Policing Command), in the west zone and part of the north zone of the capital. In addition to the 3rd CPA, in Baixada Fluminense.
The forecast is that the significant number will place the year 2024 in first place in the ranking of rifle seizures in this decade.
In a note, the State Secretariat of the Military Police of Rio de Janeiro highlighted the data regarding the origin of the weapons. According to the survey, of the 500 rifles seized between January and September, 29.8% did not have a defined brand.
“[Isso indica] that the weapons are being smuggled separately in parts and that they are assembled in the state by gunsmiths linked to criminal factions, within the communities”, said the Military Police.
