Rio de Janeiro records the first case of type 3 dengue fever in the year

This Thursday (10), the State Department of Health of Rio de Janeiro confirmed the first case of type 3 dengue in the State in 2025. The victim is a 60-year-old woman and the case remains under investigation by the Municipal Department of Health and by Lacen-RJ.

Two cases of the same serotype were registered last year, one in Paraty, in the Costa Verde region, and another in Maricá, in metropolitan region II, but there has been no predominant circulation of type 3 in the state since 2007, that is, there is a large portion of the population that has never had contact with this type of disease.

The Superintendent of Emergency and Public Health of the State Department of Health, Silvia Carvalho, stated that serotype 3 is a virus that brings the same symptoms as the others, but raises a need for greater surveillance.

According to Silvia, as this serotype has not been circulating predominantly in the State for some years, the record warns of the possibility of an increase in the intensification of cases of this variant, which could result in a greater number of people becoming ill.

The Secretary of State for Health, Claudia Mello, stated that the department will continue monitoring cases and define specific actions if it identifies circulation in the state.

Furthermore, it also states that it has been monitoring together with municipalities since the end of 2024, carrying out training with health professionals to deal with suspected cases.

This year, SES-RJ started regional workshops, with the aim of answering questions about the measures that should be adopted by municipal professionals, even in a period of low transmission. These meetings have already taken place in metropolitan regions I and II.

Number of previously registered dengue cases

More than 300 thousand cases of dengue were reported in 2024, and last year, the state of Rio experienced a dengue epidemic. 302,674 probable cases, 9,726 hospitalizations and 232 deaths were recorded across the state.

In the city of Rio de Janeiro alone, 111,114 cases were recorded, followed by Volta Redonda, with 22,705 records, and Campos dos Goytacazes, with 19,588 cases.

Pay attention to the main symptoms

  • High fever (greater than 38°C);
  • Pain in the body and joints;
  • Nausea and vomiting,
  • Pain behind the eyes;
  • Malaise;
  • Lack of appetite;
  • Headache;
  • Red spots on the body.

For the State Department of Health, combating outbreaks of aedes aegypti is the priority action. The Government of Rio, through SES-RJ, will maintain case monitoring and the “Against dengue every day” campaign, provided for in the Contingency Plan for Combating Arboviruses, in support of the 92 municipalities, with alerts and guidance on the disease.

Furthermore, it reinforces information to society about prevention, highlighting the importance of weekly inspections to avoid stagnant water in cans, empty bottles, tires, gutters, uncovered water tanks and dishes under plant pots.
