Rio de Janeiro City Hall reported that it recorded 22 medical visits related to extreme heat last weekend, the equivalent of one case every two hours, in the city’s urgent and emergency network.
Of this total, four cases were of second-degree burns resulting from the use of tanning lotion. The rest were problems related to the combination of chronic diseases, such as hypertension and diabetes, with heat.
The capital of Rio de Janeiro recorded a thermal sensation of 58.5 ºC on the morning of this Tuesday (14), in Guaratiba, in the West Zone of the city, according to information from Alerta Rio. This was the highest thermal sensation since 2014, when the agency began to take the measurement. According to the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet), Rio was the fifth hottest capital in the country yesterday, with 39.1°C.
The Municipal Health Department advises that the population avoid exposure to the sun and external activities during the hottest hours of the day, maintain hydration, avoid heavy eating and alcoholic beverages and seek cooler environments, with a fan or air conditioning.
Those mainly affected by heat waves are pregnant women, the elderly, young children, homeless people and formal and informal workers who spend most of their time on the street.
The folder also warns of the importance of paying attention to the symptoms of some problems caused by heat, such as heatstroke, headaches, nausea, cramps and fatigue after exposure to high temperatures. In these cases, the recommendation is to seek a health unit to evaluate the symptoms.
Rio’s urgency and emergency network is able to accommodate patients with conditions possibly related to climate variations, whether in winter or summer.
In a note, the secretariat stated that it monitors climate change and its implications for the population’s health, informing health protection actions and measures and mapping the city’s environmental risk areas. “SMS also maintains active surveillance in the territories, together with other responsible bodies, to update information, assess health risks due to exposure to heat and monitor the health situation of the exposed population”, completes the note.
