This Tuesday (26) Rio de Janeiro will know the name of the 2022 champion samba school. With the start of the investigation scheduled for 4 pm, the president of the Independent League of Samba Schools (Liesa), Jorge Perlingeiro, will lead the ceremony and will read the grades for the 30th consecutive time.
Before the beginning of the calculation, Perlingeiro will make a drawing to establish the reading order of the questions. The last one will be used to break the tie between two or more associations that obtain the same score.
The 45 judges chosen by Liesa are based on the Judge’s Manual to evaluate the samba schools in the competition, five for each of the nine items under analysis: drums, samba-enredo, harmony, evolution, plot, allegory and props, fantasy, front commission, in addition to a master-room and flag-bearer.
The lowest and highest grade awarded in each of the nine items under judgment will be disregarded. The groups had a minimum time of 60 minutes and a maximum of 70 minutes to parade. Every missing or missed minute will result in the loss of a tenth.
full sapucaí
The first six classified will return to Marquês de Sapucaí on Saturday (30), in the parade of champions. According to the president of Liesa, about 98% of tickets have already been sold.
“There are practically only tickets for the stands. After the wait, this year’s result was excellent. After four adjournments, the people couldn’t take it anymore. Carnival is part of our culture, of carioca life. It is the biggest event in Brazil. We will close with a very positive balance. We are reaping the fruits that we planted with so much difficulty”, assessed Perligeiro.
People interested in purchasing tickets for the Champions’ Saturday should look for the Liesa Sales and Service Center at Rua da Alfândega, 25.
Highlights at the Sambadrome
On the first day of the Grupo Especial parades, last Friday (22), the highlights were Mangueira and Beija-flor. While the first sang about its own history, paying tribute to the composer Cartola, the handler Jamelão and the master-sala Delegado, the second group shouted the struggle of the black people and the fight against prejudice.
On the second day of the parades, on Saturday (23), the highlights were the Unidos da Tijuca schools, which told the indigenous legend of guarana; Vila Isabel, with a tribute to samba musician Martinho da Vila; and Grande Rio, which brought the orixá Exu and its power of transformation to the show. The latter, in the dispute for the title of champion school in popular opinion.
The Paraíso do Tuiuti and Mocidade Independente de Padre Miguel schools suffered from errors that should cost points during the jury’s evaluation. The public saw a “hole” in the avenue during the Mocidade parade, which was one of the favorites of the night, due to a float that broke down. Despite raising the audience with its samba, Paraíso do Tuiuti, in turn, broke the parade time by two minutes, also because of a problem with the allegory.
The current Carnival champion is Viradouro, which took the title of best samba school in the last Carnival, after 23 years without winning. With the theme “Viradouro de alma Selvagem”, she talked about the group of the Winners of Itapuã, the fifth generation of women who washed clothes in Lagoa do Abaeté and did other services in Salvador in search of the purchase of their manumission. In 2022, the Niterói club innovated in a samba written in the form of a letter to talk about the first Carnival after the Spanish flu epidemic in 1919, a parallel with the Covid-19 pandemic.
Check out the samba schools’ judgment questions
Drums: the judges must consider the regular maintenance and sustaining of the cadence in line with the samba-enredo, the perfect combination of the sounds emitted by the various instruments, creativity and versatility.
Samba-Plot: the judge will evaluate the lyrics and melody separately. The adequacy of the lyrics to the plot, the poetic richness, the beauty and the good taste are considered, in addition to the adaptation to the melody. For the melody, the rhythmic characteristics of samba, the melodic richness, the good taste of the musical designs, the ability of harmony to facilitate the singing and dancing of the parades are judged.
Harmony: the jury evaluates the harmony of the samba, the perfect equality of the samba-enredo singing in line with the “pull” and the maintenance of its tonality. The singing performed by the components of each school will also be judged.
Evolution: the spontaneity, creativity, excitement and vibrancy of the parades are considered. The cohesion of the parade, that is, keeping the spacing as uniform as possible between wings and the fluency of the presentation, is also evaluated.
Plot: the values are divided into summed sub-questions. The first is the conception, which analyzes the idea presented by the school, as well as the importance and cultural density. Clarity, coherence and cohesion in the script of the parade also count. The second sub-question is realization, which validates the ability to understand the plot from the association between the concept and theme, in addition to the development presented on the avenue by the costumes, allegories and other visual elements. They also count on the creativity to tell the chosen story, the sequential presentation of the wings and allegories.
Allegory and props: are divided by the same questions as above. At conception, the suitability of the allegories and props to the plot is judged. In the realization, the impression caused by the shapes and the use of materials and colors is seen. The finishes and care in the making and decoration are also verified, with regard to the visual result.
Fantasy: another question that is divided into conception and realization. The capacity for creativity, the meaning within the plot, the finishing and the uniformity of details are analyzed.
front commission: takes into account the ability to positively impact the audience, appropriateness, creativity, costumes and choreography. The commission has the function of greeting the public and introducing the school.
Master Hall and Flag Bearer: beauty, good taste, finishing of the garment and its use for dancing are judged. It is also seen the harmony of the couple that, during the exhibition, with grace, lightness and majesty, must present a sequence of coordinated movements, highlighting the integration.
