Seven months after closing due to the flood that devastated Rio Grande do Sul, the Rio Grande do Sul Art Museum (MARGS) reopened its doors last Friday (6).
Located in Praça da Alfândega, in center of Porto Alegre the museum returned to the city’s artistic and cultural scene in a partial way.
Renovation and qualification work on the site is underway and will continue throughout 2025, which involves renovations to the building’s structure, restoration of works and the creation of a new technical reserve for the collection.
To mark the new phase, a exhibition that addresses the consequences of the flood at the museum continues until March 9, 2025. The exhibition brings together more than 100 works of more than 60 artists including objects, photos and various works.
Named “Post scriptum — A museum as memory ”, the exhibition serves as a context to narrate and show the preventive measures, the impact of the damage and the flood recovery actions at the museum, whose ground floor was flooded for more than three weeks.
The exhibition
The new exhibition occupies the 1st exhibition floor of the building and is presented in five thematic sections, designed in an interconnected manner.
With free entry visitors can see records related to the consequences of the flood in the museum through photographs, videos and objects, most of which have never been seen before. Historical materials complement the experience, such as period images and research texts, related to the Guaíba landfills and previous historical floods.
The exhibition also establishes a dialogue with works from the collection, including affected items that were recovered. Among the works on display are artists such as Alfredo Volpi , Eliseu Visconti , Glauco Rodrigues , Pedro Weingärtner , Tarsila do Amaral , Edgar Koetz and Tulio Pinto to name a few.
Museum recovery
were invested R$5.6 million for the museum’s initial actions. According to the MARGS administration, the partial reopening also involves reimagining the use of physical spaces and the museum’s operations, with updates and changes planned for the next two years.
During the flood, the ground floor was affected, an area that housed much of the internal operations, including computers, equipment and furniture, as well as the museum’s bistro.
With the flood, around four thousand items from the collection were affected by exposure to water and humidity, especially engravings, photographs and drawings.
Return from Salgado Filho Airport
Main gateway to the state, the Salgado Filho International Airport in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, resumed operations on October 21 after five months without receiving commercial flights.
The full resumption of operations is scheduled for December 16, when the runway will be fully opened, including international flights.
The reopening of the airport not only helps the arrival of visitors to Porto Alegre but also makes it easier to go to other popular tourist destinations in Rio Grande do Sul, such as Gramado, in Serra Gaúcha, which hosts the “Natal Luz” event until the 19th of January.
