The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) issued this Wednesday (22) three alerts related to the possibility of heavy rain in Rio Grande do Sul. The alerts are valid until tomorrow (23).
One of the alerts, of great danger, covers the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, in addition to the central, southeast and southwest regions of the state. There is a possibility of rain exceeding 60 mm/h or above 100 mm/day. According to Inmet, there is a risk of major flooding and river overflows and landslides on slopes.
Another warning in effect is the danger of storms. In addition to the regions already mentioned, it also covers the northwest of the state. According to the institute, there may be rain between 30 and 60 mm/h or 50 and 100 mm/day, intense winds (60 to 100 km/h) and hail.
There is also a warning of potential storm danger that could hit part of Rio Grande do Sul and western Santa Catarina. There is the possibility of rain between 20 and 30 mm/h or up to 50 mm/day, intense winds (40 to 60 km/h) and hail.
Biggest environmental tragedy in the state
Between the end of April and the month of May, Rio Grande do Sul was hit by heavy rains that have resulted, to date, in the deaths of 161 people. Another 82 are missing, according to the latest data released by Civil Defense. This is the biggest climate tragedy in the state's history.
Around 580,000 people are homeless and almost 70,000 are in shelters. The number of municipalities affected reached 467, which corresponds to almost 95% of cities in Rio Grande do Sul.
