A new cold front approaches Rio Grande do Sul, bringing rain forecast for next Thursday (16). According to meteorologists, the precipitation should be less voluminous than the storms that hit the state in recent days, but there is still a risk of a new extratropical cyclone forming on Friday (17).
Temperatures remain low in the state, reaching 0°C in some places.
Although less intense, the rain projected for the period could accumulate between 60 and 90 millimeters in several cities in Rio Grande do Sul until Sunday (19). In Santa Catarina and Paraná, volumes can exceed 100 millimeters.
A survey by Climatempo revealed that, in the first 15 days of this month, Fontoura Xavier, in the northwest of Rio Grande do Sul, recorded precipitation of almost 1,000 millimeters – a volume equivalent to six months of rain in the region.
Cities such as Lajeado, Caxias do Sul, Canoas and Porto Alegre also had accumulations of more than 500 millimeters, around five times above the average for the period.
The storms of the last few days have caused severe impacts in Rio Grande do Sul, with floods, landslides and dozens of municipalities in emergency situations. At least 149 people died. Authorities continue to monitor the risks and provide assistance to affected areas.
