The weather forecast indicates that the situation could worsen in Rio Grande do Sul this weekend. This is what a technical note from the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) points out, together with the National Center for Monitoring and Alerting of Natural Disasters (Cemaden), the National Center for Risk and Disaster Management (Cenad) and the National Institute of Space Research (Inpe), released this Thursday (09).
Rain, gusts of wind and drop in temperature
The forecast shows a drop in temperature in Rio Grande do Sul, due to the advance of a front through the state of Santa Catarina and the entry of colder air through the state of Rio Grande do Sul.
Throughout the day, this system should begin to retreat towards the south of the state, which should bring gusts of wind that could make it difficult for the waters of Lagoa dos Patos to flow towards the ocean.
Between Friday and Monday (13), more and more intense rain is forecast in the center-east and northeast of the state, a region that includes Porto Alegre, where basins capture water for the Guaíba river, which registered record levels of flooding. .
The models indicate that accumulated rainfall could exceed 150 millimeters (mm), a condition that, according to the note, could further worsen the state's situation.
A new cold front is expected to pass through the state, which may be accompanied by the formation of an extratropical cyclone. During the week, the forecast indicates that the systems could cause a drop in temperatures and the possibility of rain. “The gusts of wind will continue to blow from the southern sector and make it difficult for the water to flow”, states the note.
Rising river levels
The level of the Guaíba River may rise again due to the speed and direction of the winds. The expected return of rain to the metropolitan region and north of Rio Grande do Sul could increase the volume of water reaching the river.
The most intense rain is expected to hit the basins closest to the metropolitan region of the capital, such as the Gravataí rivers, the Sinos river and the Caí river. The note also highlights that, over the next few days, the position of the winds in Lagoa dos Patos should make it difficult for water to flow, increasing the risk of flooding in municipalities in the region of Pelotas, Rio Grande and surrounding areas.
The alert is for increased attention to the Uruguay River basin and its tributaries, which are expected to continue rising.
