O Governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite, stated on Saturday night (4) that the state will need a “Marshall Plan” for reconstruction. The devastating rains that hit the entire RS left at least 55 dead . The number may increase, as another 7 deaths are being investigated to find out whether there is a relationship with the weather events. The number of missing people is 74.
“Rio Grande do Sul will need a kind of Marshall Plan for reconstruction,” declared Leite.
The plan recalled by Leite was responsible for the economic recovery of the main European powers in the period after the Second World War. Named after its creator, George Catlett Marshall, an American army general, the program made money from the United States coffers available to countries such as Italy, France and England.
“There will be many days and many more problems,” said Leite. “But we are on all fronts, with all possible support. With the support of the Armed Forces, with the support of ministries. With city halls working together and us providing support to put machinery on the streets, to put in place conditions to restore water and energy as soon as possible. But it will be difficult, it will be difficult”, he added.
How are the searches?
According to the Minister of Communications, Paulo Pimenta, the work to rescue victims in the Vale do Taquari region is “practically completed” and the focus is now on the outskirts of the capital of Rio Grande do Sul.
“The information we have is that, at the moment, efforts are concentrated in Canoas, Eldorado, in these cities around Porto Alegre. As the water comes from that upper part of Taquari, from Jacuí, we are suffering the consequences here in Porto Alegre and around Porto Alegre”, stated Pimenta. “All rescue efforts at this moment are centered here in the metropolitan region and around Porto Alegre”, he added.
This Saturday (4), the Department of Airspace Control (Decea), linked to the Brazilian Air Force (FAB), prohibited the overflight of drones that do not belong to the bodies involved in rescue operations. The measure, according to Decea, was adopted to guarantee the safety of manned aircraft operating in rescue missions.
