The Health Department of Rio Grande do Sul, through the State Health Surveillance Center (Cevs), confirmed this Tuesday (6) the second death from dengue in the state in 2024. According to Cevs, the man from 65 years old, he lived in Santa Cruz do Sul, about 155 km from the capital Porto Alegre, had comorbidities and died on February 1st.
The state government reinforced the importance of the population seeking medical attention from health services as soon as they notice the first symptoms.
The SES states that, in this way, it is possible to prevent the disease from worsening and progressing to death.
On Monday (5), Cevs had already confirmed the first death from dengue in the state this year. According to the SES, the victim was a 71-year-old woman, resident of the city of Tenente Portela, approximately 465 km from Porto Alegre. The woman died on January 31.
In 2024, Rio Grande do Sul recorded 5,163 cases of dengue. According to the state government, 2,305 cases were of indigenous contagion, which is when the contagion occurs within the State, while the rest are imported cases. Throughout 2023, the state of Rio Grande do Sul recorded 34,000 indigenous cases and 54 deaths from the disease.
