On the first day of off-season Carnival, hotel occupancy in the city of Rio de Janeiro reached 85%, according to a survey by the Brazilian Hotel Industry Association (ABIH) with state units. Boosted by the parades of the Grupo Especial samba schools in Sapucaí, room reservations in the capital, however, can exceed 90% by the end of the holiday.
Most visitors are staying in the south and west of the city, in the neighborhoods of Leblon, Ipanema, Copacabana, Flamengo and Barra da Tijuca. According to ABIH, there is a predominance of domestic tourism, with many visitors from other states.
Despite also having parades at the Anhembi Sambadrome, the capital of São Paulo registers only 40% occupancy. Still in the Southeast region, the city of Belo Horizonte, in Minas Gerais, the entity expects the rate to reach 60%.
In the Northeast, projections are less optimistic due to the high cost of air transport. Maceió, capital of Alagoas, approaches 79%. In Recife, the expectation is to exceed 70% occupancy. In Natal, in Rio Grande do Norte, and in Aracaju, Sergipe, about 60% of the rooms are reserved. In Fortaleza, Ceará, the occupation is close to 52%.
In Santa Catarina, the capital Florianópolis expects to reach 65% occupancy. In Porto Alegre, in Rio Grande do Sul, the expectation is that at least half of the rooms will be occupied.
