Rio is the first city in Brazil to allow pets in supermarkets

Now, dogs and cats will be able to stroll in the supermarkets of Rio de Janeiro. The capital of Rio de Janeiro is the first city in the country to allow the entry and circulation of pets in establishments. The initiative was guaranteed by means of a municipal decree published this Friday (5).

Supermarkets that wish to receive the animals will have to follow a series of rules, such as checking that the deworming and vaccines are up to date and ensuring that the pet is on a leash or inside the transport box.

The Association of Supermarkets of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Asserj) will issue the Super Pet seal for establishments that wish to adhere to the practice.

“The pet friendly culture is increasingly widespread in the city, so it is only natural that supermarkets also open their doors to domestic animals. Many people leave their animals stranded at the entrance to markets while shopping, at the risk of being stolen or having an accident. The initiative aims to serve this large portion of consumers”, explained Fábio Queiróz, president of Asserj.

It will not be allowed to offer water or food to the animals inside the establishments.

The markets will be able to install recreation areas for animals, under the constant supervision of an employee, provide specific carts to carry groceries and pets and offer drinking water in a specific environment.
