Rio municipal guard sentenced to prison for pyramid scheme

A municipal guard in Rio de Janeiro was sentenced to 11 years in prison for running a pyramid scheme against colleagues from the Municipal Guard.

In total, four members were convicted of a criminal organization for the crimes of embezzlement, financial pyramid and criminal organization carried out through financial scams.

The decision was handed down this Tuesday (10) by the 3rd Specialized Court in Criminal Organization, based on the accusation of the Public Ministry of the State of Rio de Janeiro (MPRJ).

In November 2023, the four criminals were preventively arrested in Operation High Confidence, launched by the Specialized Action Group to Combat Organized Crime (GAECO) of the MPRJ and the Civil Police.

According to GAECO’s complaint, at least 12 Municipal Guard employees reported the scammer to the corporation’s Internal Affairs Department.

Investigations by the Public Ministry revealed that the criminal group moved around R$134 million between 2021 and 2022.
