Rio NGO donates 70 tons of food to people affected by cyclones in Bahia

After helping those impacted by the rupture of the Brumadinho dam and by the rains that caused landslides in Angra dos Reis and Petrópolis, the NGO Ação da Cidadania decided to send 7,000 food baskets to families affected by the extratropical cyclone in southern Bahia.

The trucks transporting the first shipment of food have already left Contagem (MG) towards Bahia and may arrive this morning. There, the food will be distributed to part of the more than 50 municipalities affected by landslides and landslides.

“We already have the support of the local Fire Department with logistical help by helicopter and transport to reach the most critical regions. The criterion is usually to start with the most affected regions and for families that have nothing, no food to eat”, explains the executive director of Ação da Cidadania, Kiko Afonso.

The baskets were already separated for the Christmas without Hunger campaign. Each one has ten kilos of food containing 3kg rice, 3kg beans, 1kg pasta, 1kg flour, 1kg sugar and 1 liter of oil.

“When we saw what happened, we decided to create routes to respond to this emergency, we already had the baskets in our hands. We can even ship more than 70 tons since everything collected from today (Saturday, 12/11) until next Saturday (12/18/) goes to the south of Bahia”, says Kiko. In his calculations, it is possible to reach 10 thousand tons if donations advance.

“We opt for smaller baskets to deliver to more families in the long term. As the donation is always below what is necessary, we always have more families in need than we are capable of, we always prefer to serve more to gain more time to raise more as well”, explains the director of the NGO.

Anyone interested in collaborating with the campaign can access the Natal Sem Fome website, where it is possible to get to know the institution better and make a donation. The Fire Department of Bahia is also collecting donations. Donations can be made at all military fire stations in the state.
