Rio police conduct operation against suspects of ‘hacking’ bank branches

The Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro carried out, this Monday morning (08), an operation to arrest suspects of ‘hacking’ Banco do Brasil branches.

According to investigations by the Rio Robbery and Theft Division (DRF), the gang installed devices in data cables at branches and, through this fraudulent system, made transfers to random account holders.

Investigations also showed that employees and contractors were enticed by the criminal association to provide access credentials to the system. The gang paid up to R$100,000 per credential.

In today’s action, six temporary arrest warrants and 15 search and seizure warrants are being served.

“Throughout the investigation, leaders of the criminal organization were identified, responsible for recruiting and paying employees, accessing the banking system and carrying out operations such as exchanging biometrics and photos and documents of clients. Subsequently, the criminals apply social engineering techniques to carry out withdrawals and transfers of funds”, stated the Civil Police.

According to the DRF, the criminal association is made up of several cells, and has been systematically committing dozens of crimes throughout the national territory, generating an estimated loss of R$40 million.

The Civil Police also stated that the financial institution’s intelligence sector has been carrying out several actions to block the criminals’ actions and has collaborated and assisted the investigations.

A CNN contacted Banco do Brasil and is awaiting a response.
