The Government of Rio de Janeiro has announced that the Military Police will receive, by the end of this year, a BLACK HAWK HELICOPTER . The aircraft, widely used by the US Armed Forces and present in various conflicts since the 1970s, will be incorporated into the corporation’s air fleet, currently composed of models such as Bell Huey II, AW-169, AW119 and H-125.
The UH-60 Black Hawk is a multifunction helicopter, capable of carrying up to 11 equipped soldiers, plus four crew. The version that will be sent to the PM has shielding and can be equipped with side weapons. According to technical information, it can reach up to 294 km/he has flight autonomy of approximately 590 km.
The model became famous after the operation carried out in 1993 in Mogadiscio, Somalia, when two units were shot down during a Mission of the United States Special Forces. The episode was portrayed in the book Black Hawk Down and adapted to the cinema.
The use of the aircraft by PM Fluminense marks the first time this type of equipment will be employed by a state police force in Brazil. Until then, Black Hawk was used exclusively by the Brazilian Armed Forces – Army, Navy and Aeronautics – which currently add up to 26 units of the model.
The information was released during a delivery ceremony of 214 new vehicles to the Military Police, held on Tuesday (6), in the Arcos da Lapa.
Yesterday (8), the governor reaffirmed a new public tender for the corporation that will be held in 2026 and the expansion of the staff with more than 2,000 police officers until the end of the current government. Currently, the Military Police staff is about 43,000 police officers, including squares and officers.
According to the State Government, since 2021, more than $ 4 billion in public safety have been invested. Acquisitions include vehicles, armored, weapons, ballistic vests, protective equipment and technology.
The helicopter is expected to start operating in special missions and supporting tactical actions in areas considered sensitive, expanding the reach and response of police forces in critical situations.
