Rio Prefecture recommends return to mask use

The mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes, recommended during a press conference this Thursday (2) that priority groups such as people with comorbidities, the elderly and students wear a mask due to an increase in the number of cases in the last two weeks. Paes made it clear that this is not an imposition.

“We will not impose the use of a mask, but we will suggest that these people, if possible, wear masks. We are in the field of recommendations. We hope not to have to impose any restrictive measures.”

The Superintendent of Health Surveillance, Márcio Garcia commented on the increase in the number of cases in recent weeks, the number of deaths did not grow.

“We are entering the winter period. An increase in cases of flu syndrome is expected. Of every 100 people, 80 with symptoms are not with covid. At the peak we had 180,000 cases in a single week and today the peak is less than a thousand cases per day. Our highest peak in recent weeks was 5,000 cases in 7 days last week.”

More cases of Covid were recorded this year than last year and in 2020. In 2022 Rio recorded 462 thousand, last year there were 307 thousand records and in 2020 there were 221 thousand.

Paes made an appeal for people to take the vaccine. “Vaccine does not have any type of contraindication except in specific cases. So here’s the appeal for people to get vaccinated. We will monitor this closely, understanding that we live in another moment”.

The city of Rio has an occupancy rate of 97%. 69 people are hospitalized with Covid, 28 in ICUs. 14 people are waiting for beds.
