The weather forecast indicates that Rio de Janeiro should have another weekend with storms. After hitting mainly Rio Grande do Sul over the last few days, the storms are advancing through Santa Catarina and Paraná and are expected to reach the Southeast, hitting mainly Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
According to the Rio Alert System, weather conditions in the capital of Rio de Janeiro will be influenced by areas of instability associated with the slow movement of the cold front over the ocean. Thus, there will be an increase in cloudiness with the sky changing from cloudy to overcast, with moderate to heavy rain forecast from the afternoon onwards, which could be very heavy in short periods of time.
The storm may also be accompanied by lightning and moderate to strong wind gusts. Temperatures are stable, with a predicted minimum of 20°C and a maximum of 35°C. Around 35 millimeters of rain are expected this day.
For Sunday, the expectation is that the volume will be even greater, between 70 and 90 millimeters of rain, with moderate to heavy intensity. Added together, the volumes on Saturday and Sunday should be similar to those of last weekend, which worries authorities, as the ground is still wet in some regions of the state.
The temperature is expected to drop a little on Sunday, with a maximum forecast of 27ºC. The rain is expected to remain until at least next Tuesday (23), but will lose intensity from Monday (22).
The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) and the National Civil Defense issued a danger alert for intense rain in Rio de Janeiro.
The National Natural Disaster Monitoring and Alert Center (Cemaden) also warned of a moderate risk of flooding and river overflows.
In case of heavy rain, people are advised to seek safe shelter, avoiding trees or fragile metal coverings. Furthermore, it is recommended to keep away from windows, glass and sharp objects.
Last weekend, at least 12 people died as a result of heavy rains in Rio de Janeiro. Municipalities in Baixada Fluminense, such as São João de Meriti and Duque de Caxias, were the main affected areas.
Two people remain missing. One of them is hairdresser Elaine Cristina Souza Gomes, who had her car swept away by the flood in the Rio Botas, in Belford Roxo, also in Baixada.
