Oxford University’s first global health and clinical research unit in the Americas will be installed in Rio de Janeiro and will be led by Brazilian researcher and professor Sue Ann Clemens, responsible for conducting the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine studies in the country.
The unit is scheduled to open in 2022 and will work in the development of medicines and vaccines to leverage research in human health.
The center will offer scholarships for master’s, doctoral and courses in infectious diseases, clinical development and vaccinology, as reported by the University of Oxford on its website. In Brazil, the institution will offer master’s, PhD and professional updating courses. The location where the campus will be installed has not yet been announced.
The unit, which will be supported by the British government, will have scientific support from the University of Siena, in Italy, the Institute for Global Health at College London, in the United Kingdom, and the International Vaccine Institute of the United Nations (UN).
The partnership between the university and the Brazilian government was signed on October 27 by the minister of Health Marcelo Queiroga, during a visit to the institution’s headquarters, in England.
On the occasion, Queiroga said that the term of commitment “is a nod to the future, for the training of researchers who will be able to build a more efficient and solid health system, with the capacity to serve Brazilians with increasing quality.”
