Rio’s Book Biennial comes to an end with record sales and 250,000 visitors

The 20th Edition of the Rio de Janeiro Book Biennial closed the ten days of the event with record sales. Of the 250,000 people who visited the Riocentro pavilions, in the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro, 99% bought at least one book.

The average was eight books per visitor to the fair, which took place between December 3rd and 12th. However, the organization has not released the exact number of copies sold.

According to the official balance, among visitors in person, 34.5% attended the event for the first time and 50.8% were young people between 18 and 25 years old. For the first time in a hybrid model, the event reached, or all, around one million people with the online transmission of the debate tables.

“Sales at the 2021 Bienal were very surprising! We were impressed by the appetite of the visitors. The cultural program was another success, with sessions filled in person and with a good online audience”, highlighted Marcos da Veiga Pereira, president of the National Union of Book Publishers (Snel).

For the more than 85 participating publishers, increased sales were a reality. In relation to 2019, the index among companies ranged from 20% to 120%.

The best-selling nonfiction work is the biography of film actor and producer Will Smith: “Will”. Among national authors, the greatest success was the novel “Love is not obvious”, by Elayne Baeta. The most bought fiction was “It’s just like that”, by the American writer Colleen Hoover.

The so-called Estação Plural, space for debates at the event, had more than 180 guests. Lázaro Ramos, Conceição Evaristo, Julia Quinn, Gabriela Prioli, Muniz Sodré and Lulu Santos were some of the names who participated in the lectures and conversation circles open to the public.

Among the visitors, nearly 70,000 were students from the municipal and state public schools. Students and teachers received vouchers to purchase works at the fair. More than 50,000 professors also attended the event.
