Riots in Jerusalem: over 180 injured

In Jerusalem, clashes erupted between police and Palestinian protesters, resulting in more than 180 injuries. Reported by Reuters.

More than 80 people were hospitalized, one wounded is in critical condition. Tensions rose on Jerusalem Day, “the annual celebration of the takeover of East Jerusalem and the walled Old City, which is home to Muslim, Jewish and Christian holy sites.”

The police used tear gas, stun grenades and rubber bullets against the protesters. Palestinians threw stones at law enforcement officers. Police said they have deployed thousands of officers on the streets and rooftops of Jerusalem to maintain law and order.

Israel views all of Jerusalem as its capital, including the annexed eastern part, which is not recognized by the international community. The Palestinians want East Jerusalem to be the capital of their state. Tensions are also fueled by the planned evictions of several Palestinian families in East Jerusalem.

  • Tensions in Israel have risen in recent weeks amid protests by Palestinians against Israel’s access to parts of Jerusalem’s Old City during Ramadan. The Israeli authorities have attempted to dislodge the Palestinians from the disputed territories in order to obtain a place for settlers.
  • As a result, on May 7, clashes broke out between Palestinians and the police, injuring at least 205 demonstrators and 18 Israeli officers. Law enforcers used rubber bullets and noise grenades.
